  1. 0:00Darkness is not an affirmative force.
  2. 0:02It simply reoccupies the space vacated by the light.
  3. 0:06This is the Hamilton Corner on American Family Radio.
  4. 0:10It should be uncomfortable for a believer to live as a hypocrite.
  5. 0:15Delivering people out of the bondage of mainstream media.
  6. 0:18And the philosophies of this world.
  7. 0:20God has called you and me to be His ambassador.
  8. 0:23Even in this dark moment.
  9. 0:26Let's not miss our moment.
  10. 0:28And now the Hamilton Corner.
  11. 0:31Good evening everybody.
  12. 0:34Welcome to the Hamilton Corner.
  13. 0:35Abraham Hamilton III is my name, joined by
  14. 0:42produce extraordinaire, the real G. Mack.
  15. 0:45I think I mentioned I'm the host of this program.
  16. 0:49No, I don't think I said it today.
  17. 0:51But I am the host of this program,
  18. 0:52excited to be with you today.
  19. 0:55Looking forward to the issue that we're going to address
  20. 1:01during today's program, actually it's multi-layered,
  21. 1:06but we're gonna have a real-time discussion
  22. 1:10about the reality that because someone may be,
  23. 1:17an exceedingly exceptional professional athlete,
  24. 1:23that doesn't mean that they're good at everything else.
  25. 1:27It also doesn't mean that they give great advice
  26. 1:30for life across the board.
  27. 1:33Now being a professional athlete doesn't mean you don't have good advice for other areas
  28. 1:39outside of your profession.
  29. 1:41You could, but it isn't automatically the case.
  30. 1:45And in our culture and in our society, we tend to celebrities and idolize figures because
  31. 1:57of their popular professional accomplishments.
  32. 2:03But just because you're popular, doesn't mean you're right about everything.
  33. 2:09And as always, the word of God should be our ultimate arbiter of all matters, all matters
  34. 2:19of life, doctrine and practice.
  35. 2:24So we're going to delve into that a bit during today's program.
  36. 2:28At this very moment, many of you, if not most of you are making your transition from your
  37. 2:31part-time jobs where you generate an income to your full-time jobs, where you cultivate
  38. 2:35an outcome.
  39. 2:36I want to remind you to do so with intentionality because what goes on in your house
  40. 2:45is far more important than what goes on in the White House. I
  41. 2:50Describe what we do to generate revenue as our part-time jobs because it is not synonymous with our
  42. 2:57identities. The common utilization of the full-time job expression
  43. 3:02and within our culture is often conflated with identity.
  44. 3:10Hence my utilization of that phrase
  45. 3:13to focus on our full-time jobs
  46. 3:17and relating and connecting that to what we do in our homes.
  47. 3:24The fundamental building block for any society
  48. 3:26is a family, is the family.
  49. 3:27The fundamental building block for the church is the family.
  50. 3:30The first human institution,
  51. 3:33The first human institution that got created was the family.
  52. 3:39And marriage is the center and fulcrum of the family
  53. 3:47because there are other things that are also important.
  54. 3:52We can very easily allow there to be a functional
  55. 3:56and practical shifting in priority.
  56. 4:03But we need to be very intentional,
  57. 4:05first be very aware, and then secondarily be very intentional
  58. 4:09about making sure we keep the main thing, the main thing.
  59. 4:15All right?
  60. 4:18To the word of God we go.
  61. 4:21Because when I say keep the main thing, the main thing,
  62. 4:23I'm not saying that that is something
  63. 4:24that is solely the product of humanistic effort
  64. 4:29because it's not.
  65. 4:31Proverbs chapter eight, Proverbs chapter eight,
  66. 4:35verses 12 through 17 is what we're gonna go today.
  67. 4:40Proverbs chapter eight,
  68. 4:43verses 12 through 17.
  69. 4:49And this is what God's word says.
  70. 4:53I wisdom, I should have said this here in this passage,
  71. 4:57God is being represented by wisdom.
  72. 5:03I should say it better.
  73. 5:04Wisdom, the characteristic of wisdom is being personified
  74. 5:10as if it's a stand in for God.
  75. 5:15But the feature of God's character, which is wisdom,
  76. 5:18is being personified in this text.
  77. 5:21All right, Proverbs chapter eight verse 12.
  78. 5:23I wisdom dwell with prudence,
  79. 5:27and I find knowledge and discretion.
  80. 5:33The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil,
  81. 5:39pride and arrogance, and the way of evil
  82. 5:44and perverted speech I hate.
  83. 5:48I have counsel and sound wisdom.
  84. 5:53I have insight, I have strength.
  85. 5:56By me, meaning wisdom, kings reign,
  86. 6:02and rulers decree what is just.
  87. 6:07By me wisdom again, princes rule,
  88. 6:12and nobles in all who govern justly.
  89. 6:19I love those who love me,
  90. 6:21and those who seek me diligently find me.
  91. 6:28Those who seek me diligently find me.
  92. 6:33Brothers and sisters, wisdom is one of the things,
  93. 6:38one of the characteristics, one of the life features
  94. 6:42that are available, that is available
  95. 6:45to each and every one of us.
  96. 6:48Those who seek me diligently find me.
  97. 6:55Those who seek the wisdom of God diligently find wisdom.
  98. 7:00Those who seek God diligently find wisdom.
  99. 7:07I've explained before, knowledge is the acquisition of information.
  100. 7:12Wisdom is the proper and timely. Notice those two components.
  101. 7:16The proper and timely application of knowledge.
  102. 7:23The proper and timely application of knowledge.
  103. 7:27knowledge. As I mentioned here, wisdom is personified as a stand in for God because you
  104. 7:35look in verse 14, it says, I, meaning wisdom, have counsel and wisdom. Well, you say, well,
  105. 7:40why will wisdom have wisdom? Because wisdom is being personified as God. Yeah, you see
  106. 7:45it on the screen right now. Verse 14, I, wisdom, have counsel and sound wisdom because God is
  107. 7:52being personified here. Earlier in this same chapter, the
  108. 7:57proverb right articulates that the simple or the ignorant or the
  109. 8:01unlearned can be made wise, that God makes wise the simple. Now
  110. 8:10going back to verse 12, I wisdom dwell with prudence. I
  111. 8:15wisdom find knowledge and discretion. All right. Going back
  112. 8:22to how I defined wisdom.
  113. 8:24Wisdom is the proper and timely application of knowledge.
  114. 8:32Now this is something that's gonna rub all the regrets
  115. 8:34of the wrong way.
  116. 8:37The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil.
  117. 8:41This is for those over there in the side pocket,
  118. 8:43over there in the side pocket that shout things like,
  119. 8:45this God is love, God is love.
  120. 8:49They say like this, Jeff, God is love.
  121. 8:51He's so loving, he's love.
  122. 8:54You can't be gotten, you're not a God
  123. 8:56because you're not a love.
  124. 9:00He's loving love, love wins, love wins.
  125. 9:07It wins, yeah, it wins.
  126. 9:11The Bible says the fear of the Lord is the hatred,
  127. 9:14is hatred of evil.
  128. 9:15Whoa, wisdom being personified, pride and arrogance
  129. 9:23and the way of evil and perverted speech, I hate.
  130. 9:29back to those in the side pocket who shout ignorantly,
  131. 9:34God is love.
  132. 9:36God is love, but he's not some rom-com comedian.
  133. 9:40In love, the love of God is not what the world describes
  134. 9:46as love.
  135. 9:47When the world says love, they mean passive acceptance
  136. 9:50of anything someone wants to do.
  137. 9:53If you dare have a question or an objection to something
  138. 9:57that someone wants to say, think, believe, or do,
  139. 10:01then they say you are hateful.
  140. 10:06Well, let me tell you something.
  141. 10:07The God that is love, he hates evil.
  142. 10:12The God that is love, he hates pride.
  143. 10:17Read the Bible.
  144. 10:18The God that is love, he hates arrogance.
  145. 10:22The God that is love hates the way of evil.
  146. 10:26The God that is love hates perverted speech.
  147. 10:31The God that is love hates perverted speech.
  148. 10:41So marinate on that for a second.
  149. 10:44Yes, God is love.
  150. 10:45But when you say the word L-O-V-E,
  151. 10:48the four letters that add up to the word that is love,
  152. 10:54that is not what God means when you say it,
  153. 10:57unless you're saying it according to what
  154. 10:59the scripture articulates.
  155. 11:03See, the love of God hates perverted speech.
  156. 11:09Well, what's perverted speech?
  157. 11:10Oh, you know, saying things like, oh boy is a girl.
  158. 11:13That's perverted speech.
  159. 11:15What else perverted?
  160. 11:16Oh yeah, he's saying two men, they can be married.
  161. 11:19That's perverted speech.
  162. 11:20Two women, perverted speech.
  163. 11:23A man in the side piece perverted speech.
  164. 11:27The adulterer, the adulterer perverted speech.
  165. 11:30The thief perverted speech.
  166. 11:32The hormunga perverted speech
  167. 11:33in the heterosexual context perverted speech.
  168. 11:40God hates perverted speech,
  169. 11:42which is why his righteous rad
  170. 11:46is appropriately placed upon the unpinotent sin,
  171. 11:53sin, his righteous wrath.
  172. 11:57This doesn't comport with progressive ideology.
  173. 12:00They don't wanna hear anything about this,
  174. 12:03but it doesn't make any less true.
  175. 12:07It's important for us to note that this is included
  176. 12:10as wisdom is being exalted in this passage.
  177. 12:15Hey, by the way, the fear of the Lord is to hate evil.
  178. 12:17Hate evil.
  179. 12:20This is why I have to say the believer
  180. 12:24should be mortified by his or her own sin.
  181. 12:32But by wisdom, if you look at verse 15,
  182. 12:37by wisdom, Kings reign and rule is decree what is just.
  183. 12:43One of the major distinctions between just leadership
  184. 12:47and unjust leadership is the wisdom quotient,
  185. 12:53the appropriate, the proper and timely application
  186. 12:58application of knowledge. The same script from Proverbs 1 says, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
  187. 13:10So if you have a person functioning in a leadership capacity, but they do not have the fear of the Lord,
  188. 13:16can they be wise? According to what the scripture teaches, the simple answer is no, no, no.
  189. 13:26They can have knowledge, they can have information, but
  190. 13:34biblically the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
  191. 13:37So if there is no fear of the Lord, their acquisition of information
  192. 13:42doesn't meet the biblical criteria for knowledge.
  193. 13:45And the absence of satisfying the biblical criteria for knowledge
  194. 13:49deprives that one of having wisdom.
  195. 13:56By wisdom, Prince's rule and noble govern justly, just governance requires wisdom.
  196. 14:10And it is the wise who function with the readied, demonstrable application of discernment.
  197. 14:22In this age of deception, we must have wisdom.
  198. 14:28No, you're getting.
  199. 14:31Get knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.
  200. 14:36This is something that should be a consistent component
  201. 14:40of our Christ to the Lord.
  202. 14:41I'm pleased to the Lord, our prayers.
  203. 14:43Lord, would you please give me wisdom?
  204. 14:47Lord, would you make me wise?
  205. 14:49Lord, would you open my eyes
  206. 14:52that I may see rightly and that I function with wisdom?
  207. 15:01Children, of course, are given to parents by God,
  208. 15:06not to the state.
  209. 15:07Children don't belong to the state,
  210. 15:08and we need to make sure that those lines are very clearly
  211. 15:12protected and increasingly secularized culture,
  212. 15:15where the government has not only tried to make the church
  213. 15:20completely irrelevant, but basically replace parents.
  214. 15:24Jenna Ellis in the morning, weekdays at 7c,
  215. 15:27on American Family Radio.
  216. 15:35Shining light into the darkness.
  217. 15:37This is the Hamilton Corner, an American family radio.
  218. 15:40Welcome back to the Hamilton Corner, Abraham Hamilton.
  219. 15:43The third here, delighted to be with you.
  220. 15:49Delighted to be with you.
  221. 15:50You often hear me discuss Charles Burgess' description
  222. 15:54of discernment, where in which he says discernment,
  223. 15:57which he said discernment is not merely distinguishing right
  224. 16:00from wrong, but discernment includes distinguishing right
  225. 16:03from almost right.
  226. 16:05The sermon includes distinguishing right from almost right.
  227. 16:10And we're going to have a real time demonstration of that reality.
  228. 16:17To do so, we're going to have a conversation about Scotty
  229. 16:21Sheffler, who is the world's ranked ranked the number one golfer in the world
  230. 16:29currently. Um, he has one four major golf tournaments, four majors,
  231. 16:40including two majors this major's this season.
  232. 16:44He's also won 17 PGA Tour Titles,
  233. 16:48which is the Professional Golfers Association.
  234. 16:51Tour Titles, he's a Christian, a husband,
  235. 16:56and a father, and he has drawn comparisons
  236. 17:02to Tiger Woods, all right.
  237. 17:08We're also gonna have a conversation
  238. 17:10about Thomas Edward Brady, Tom Brady.
  239. 17:15widely regarded in the sports world as the greatest NFL quarterback in the history of the sport.
  240. 17:21He has won seven NFL Super Bowls. That's for those that don't know nothing about sports. That's
  241. 17:27the championship in the National Football League. He's appeared in 10 Super Bowls. So 10 Super Bowl
  242. 17:33appearances, seven wins, lost Eli Manning twice and he lost to Nick Fos and the Philadelphia Eagles
  243. 17:40once. All right. Most of his super bowl six out of the seven that he
  244. 17:45want he won with the New England Patriots. He also won a super bowl
  245. 17:50with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. You know, widely regarded. Like as I
  246. 17:55mentioned, that's the greatest NFL quarterback in the history of the
  247. 17:58sport. Upon, well, two things, Scotty Scheffler did two things. So
  248. 18:07about a month ago, the British Open was played the 153rd British
  249. 18:10open and he made some comments that were quite stirring to our culture.
  250. 18:17What I heard when I was like, yeah, I don't see any problem with what he said.
  251. 18:20You had lots of people that I can't, I can't believe it.
  252. 18:24You know, sounded like Mard Simpson.
  253. 18:26I can't believe it.
  254. 18:28They're there.
  255. 18:29There's a professional athlete that will see these things in public right
  256. 18:33at the time that he's he's the most perfect home.
  257. 18:35Can you believe it?
  258. 18:38You know, I had that when I, Jeff, you know, I didn't know either.
  259. 18:41I just did it.
  260. 18:42Can you believe it?
  261. 18:44Oh, me?
  262. 18:46I can't believe a professional athlete was saying these kind of things in plumb line.
  263. 18:54That drew the eye of Tom Brady.
  264. 18:56Then he wins the tournament.
  265. 18:57It's got his shuffle of wins the tournament.
  266. 19:00And he basically said, man, yeah, listen, I told y'all how I feel about this.
  267. 19:04Yeah, it's cool.
  268. 19:05Look, I love being a professional golfer.
  269. 19:08I've been working at this for my entire life.
  270. 19:11I feel like.
  271. 19:13But this is not the sum total of who I am.
  272. 19:17It's almost like he listens to the Hamilton Corner.
  273. 19:19Look, I play golf, but golf doesn't play me.
  274. 19:21This is not my full time job.
  275. 19:25You know, my faith and my family come before this all day long.
  276. 19:30Now that's the age standard version translation.
  277. 19:32He didn't say it like that.
  278. 19:33But that's what he said.
  279. 19:34My faith and my family comes first, then golf.
  280. 19:39You know, it's cool to win tournaments like this.
  281. 19:43But ultimately, this is not satisfying.
  282. 19:46I'll enjoy it for a moment,
  283. 19:48but then I'm gonna come back down to earth
  284. 19:49and live real life, cause life is real.
  285. 19:51And there are other things that are more important to me
  286. 19:54than golf.
  287. 19:56Well, to many in the sports world,
  288. 20:03that was almost sacrilegious to have Scotty Sheffler say that.
  289. 20:07And his comments even drew the ire of one Tom Brady.
  290. 20:10So I'm gonna share the comments with you.
  291. 20:13And I'm gonna start with video and audio
  292. 20:19of what Scottie Scheffler said after he won the tournament, just to kind of set the stage
  293. 20:24because the comments that drew the most ire was actually the things he said beforehand.
  294. 20:29And because of what he said beforehand, people already knew, well we kind of know what Scottie's
  295. 20:33coming from.
  296. 20:35So listen to Scottie Scheffler upon winning the British Open.
  297. 20:39He explains, listen, this is great.
  298. 20:41I love it.
  299. 20:42But faith, my faith and my family are first.
  300. 20:45Listen to and watch.
  301. 20:46Clip number two, clip two.
  302. 20:47Go.
  303. 20:48I've worked since I was two or three years old to have a chance to play professional golfer
  304. 20:52living and now I've been able to win tournaments that I just dreamed of playing in and it's
  305. 20:57an amazing feeling and I'm so grateful to be able to live out my dreams.
  306. 21:00But like I said, my faith in my family is what's most important to me and I try to live
  307. 21:06as normal a life as possible because I feel like a normal guy.
  308. 21:09I have the same friends I had growing up.
  309. 21:13I don't think that I'm anything special just because some weeks I'm better at shooting
  310. 21:16a lower score than other guys are.
  311. 21:20Now for those of you who are not Gulf aficionados,
  312. 21:22the golden golf is to shoot a lower score.
  313. 21:25I know that's counterintuitive to some of our major American sports,
  314. 21:29but basically trying to get the ball in the hole in as few shots
  315. 21:34that call strokes as possible.
  316. 21:36So the one with the lower score normally wins.
  317. 21:38So Scottie Sheffler, you saw him up there sitting there with that trophy
  318. 21:41or that thing right there on the table next to him.
  319. 21:42He's like, listen, winning is fantastic.
  320. 21:46But my faith in my family come first.
  321. 21:48I'm just a normal guy.
  322. 21:50You know, I don't think that I'm better than anybody overall was what Scottie
  323. 21:55Sheffler saying simply because on a particular tournament in a particular
  324. 21:59tournament tournament, I was able to play golf better than some other dudes.
  325. 22:04Now Scottie Sheffler didn't mention this.
  326. 22:05He's like, he's 29 years old.
  327. 22:07That's amazing perspective from a 29 year old.
  328. 22:11It's an amazing perspective to have, especially in this culture that we live
  329. 22:14in with celebrity worship and professional athletes because of their wealth and
  330. 22:18their prominence, that they are viewed with such vaunted, with such such vaunted position
  331. 22:23in our society. That's amazing for him to say that. I applaud Scotty Sheffler saying
  332. 22:33that, but not everybody was happy with that, which is kind of telling those who found Scotty
  333. 22:40Sheffler's comments concerning. And one of the people who found Scotty Sheffler's comments
  334. 22:46concerning was Tom Brady. Now, Tom Brady, one of the things I mentioned to him, the greatest
  335. 22:51NFL quarterback of all time, although Patrick Mahomes is on them heels.
  336. 22:57He's biting up them heels.
  337. 23:00If Patrick Mahomes continues as he has, Tom Brady might become number two.
  338. 23:06In some people's eyes, Tom Brady is already number two.
  339. 23:09I don't know how many people share that sentiment, but Tom Brady's widely regarded at this moment
  340. 23:14as the greatest quarterback in NFL history.
  341. 23:18And one of the major contributing factors to that is that coming out of college, Tom
  342. 23:22Tom Brady was not regarded as a high draft prospect.
  343. 23:26He's widely known as being drafted 199th in the NFL draft.
  344. 23:30He's like a seventh round pick.
  345. 23:33When he was drafted to a team, he wasn't expected to be
  346. 23:35starting quarterback, but he had an indomitable work ethic.
  347. 23:40He got better as a professional.
  348. 23:42His arm strength got stronger and he won, like I mentioned,
  349. 23:46the seven Super Bowls.
  350. 23:48Well, Tom Brady, he has a newsletter, which I was unaware
  351. 23:52that he had, that he puts out at TomBrady.com and he uses this newsletter to kind of, you
  352. 23:59know, give advice. You know, he's the Tom Brady version of the mamba mentality like Kobe
  353. 24:04Brian, oh, work, you know, kind of thing. And he offers what he calls life lessons and his
  354. 24:13website. And he had a bit of an issue with what Scotty
  355. 24:19Shuffler said. Now I'm going to read from this because I want to place it in context.
  356. 24:24I want to tell you guys plainly.
  357. 24:26There was some things that Tom Brady said in this article
  358. 24:30that are good, that are helpful,
  359. 24:32that I feel like it's good advice.
  360. 24:37But I feel like Tom Brady misses a major component
  361. 24:42of what Scotty Schifler said that drew his ire.
  362. 24:46Now, before I get into Tom Brady's piece,
  363. 24:49I want you to hear the comments that Scotty Schifler made
  364. 24:52at the media day for the British Open.
  365. 24:55So this is the media event where all of the participants
  366. 25:00in the golf tournament, they have, especially,
  367. 25:02especially all of the top participants
  368. 25:04and those who are expected to perform well,
  369. 25:06they're interviewed during media day.
  370. 25:08And Scotty Scheffler was interviewed
  371. 25:11and he says something that was profound.
  372. 25:13Before he went out and won the tournament,
  373. 25:15now I want you to remind you,
  374. 25:17you're gonna see a similar background behind
  375. 25:19Scotty Scheffler but he doesn't have on a different shirt
  376. 25:20and you notice he won't have the trophy next to him.
  377. 25:22Because these are the things he said
  378. 25:24Before he went out and won the tournament,
  379. 25:26listen to and watch clip number one, clip one, go.
  380. 25:30I love the challenge.
  381. 25:31I love being able to play this game for a living.
  382. 25:32It's one of the greatest joys of my life,
  383. 25:34but does it fill the deepest wants and desires of my heart?
  384. 25:39Absolutely not.
  385. 25:40You know, that's why I talk about families being my priority
  386. 25:41because it really is.
  387. 25:43You know, I'm blessed to be able to come out here
  388. 25:44and play golf, but if my golf ever started affecting
  389. 25:48my home life or it ever affected the relationship I have
  390. 25:50with my wife or with my son, you know,
  391. 25:52that's gonna be the last day that I play out here
  392. 25:53for a living, you know, this is not the be all end all.
  393. 25:56This is not the most important thing in my life.
  394. 25:58And that's why wrestle with why is this so important to me
  395. 26:01because I would much rather be a great father
  396. 26:03than I would be a great golfer.
  397. 26:05You know, at the end of the day,
  398. 26:06that's what's more important to me.
  399. 26:10Now, like I said, it's not like Scotty
  400. 26:12listening to the corner, doesn't it?
  401. 26:14Scotty's like, yeah, four, but that's my part time gig.
  402. 26:19Hole in one part time.
  403. 26:24He said if his golf career ever affected,
  404. 26:31in the implication there's negatively affected
  405. 26:34his home life, affected his relationship with his wife
  406. 26:39and his son negatively,
  407. 26:41that would be the last day he would be a professional golfer.
  408. 26:47To which I and many of you listening to me right now
  409. 26:50are like, amen, amen.
  410. 26:54What can I tell you?
  411. 26:56In our culture, there were a lot of people
  412. 26:57who didn't, amen, Scotty, Chef, look,
  413. 26:59Can you believe that?
  414. 27:00Well, I'm sure you can't believe that.
  415. 27:02And one of the people that did not
  416. 27:03Amen, Scotty Scheffler was the Tom Brady.
  417. 27:08He took issue with Scotty Scheffler's comments.
  418. 27:10In fact, he almost, you know, on the block,
  419. 27:13we call him the son, son of him.
  420. 27:15He kind of tried to son Scotty Scheffler.
  421. 27:16He's like, yeah, you know, he's young, 29.
  422. 27:19He hasn't figured out his priorities in life yet.
  423. 27:21He's like, whoa.
  424. 27:24Off the top rope, are you coming off the top rope
  425. 27:26against Scotty Scheffler, Mr. Brady?
  426. 27:29Yeah, I've said something similar.
  427. 27:31When I was young, that was before I really got in the swing of life.
  428. 27:34This is literally how he starts off his piece.
  429. 27:36In fact, I was read to you how he began his piece, how he began his piece.
  430. 27:41Tom Brady, his article is titled, Your Actions, Reflect Your Priorities.
  431. 27:46He started off his piece by saying, in 2005, I gave an interview to 60 minutes where I
  432. 27:52sounded a little bit like Scotty Scheffler.
  433. 27:55I had won three Super Bowls in my first four years as a starter and I was explaining to
  434. 27:59the interviewer how, when I looked at my trophies and
  435. 28:02Super Bowl rings, I found myself thinking, there's got to be
  436. 28:05more than this. This can't be all. I was 27 years old. I was
  437. 28:11young. My first son, Jack wouldn't be born for another year
  438. 28:14and a half. Football was a very important part of my life, but
  439. 28:17similar to Scotty, I could feel myself resisting the
  440. 28:20expectation placed on elite athletes by the media and by
  441. 28:24society in general to use professional achievement as the
  442. 28:28primary meter for personal satisfaction.
  443. 28:36He goes on to say, at any given moment,
  444. 28:42one of these priorities is taking precedence over the others.
  445. 28:45And the question is always whether it's the right priority
  446. 28:48for the moment.
  447. 28:49That is the question that seems Scotty Scheffler is wrestling
  448. 28:52with.
  449. 28:53Do I have my priority straight?
  450. 28:55But I think figuring out that answer is pretty straight forward.
  451. 28:59In quote, now I'm going to disagree, Mr. Brater,
  452. 29:02right there.
  453. 29:02I don't think Scottie Scheffler is trying
  454. 29:04to figure out his priorities.
  455. 29:05Do you? It seems Scotty Sheffler was pretty clear on what his priorities were.
  456. 29:12This is even that way to you Jeff. He wasn't trying to figure it out.
  457. 29:15He was announcing what he had figured out. But his announcement seemed to have pricked Mr. Brady.
  458. 29:28Now I'll tell you why. Now we're going to get into the thick of it.
  459. 29:31And this is going to be a longer quote, even than I just read just now.
  460. 29:36Continuing his creed where he's kind of sonny.
  461. 29:38Scotty Scheffler saying that,
  462. 29:40oh he's trying to figure out his priorities.
  463. 29:41Nah, Tom, he's pretty clear on what his priorities were,
  464. 29:44faith in his family.
  465. 29:46Then golf.
  466. 29:47He seemed pretty clear in that order.
  467. 29:49Get it right and keep it right.
  468. 29:51But Tom Brady didn't like it.
  469. 29:52He didn't like it.
  470. 29:54Because what Scotty Scheffler said,
  471. 29:57remember the old expression, hit dogs, holler?
  472. 30:00What Scotty Scheffler said,
  473. 30:01world's number one golfer,
  474. 30:03kind of rubbed the world's number one
  475. 30:05quarter back the wrong way a little bit. Here's an example that I'm talking about. Back to
  476. 30:11Tom Brady's piece, quote, as part of his answer at media day, for example, he's referring to
  477. 30:17media day at the British Open, that's Scottie Sheffield ultimately won. As part of his answer
  478. 30:22at media day, for example, Scottie said, and I'm quoting from Tom Brady's piece, Scottie
  479. 30:25said, he'd rather be a better father and husband than a good golfer. And my question
  480. 30:32is, why are those mutually exclusive? Sure, they're different blocks on the pyramid, but
  481. 30:40they're part of the same pyramid. They're connected. For instance, I think part of being
  482. 30:46a great father is being a great example of doing what it takes to take care of your family.
  483. 30:52I chose to do it by playing football. My dedication to the sport, the hours of practice, the moments
  484. 30:58when I was laser focused, those were times when I believe I was doing the best possible
  485. 31:03thing for my family and my kids, by prioritizing my profession and teaching by example what it
  486. 31:09takes to be really good at your job, what it takes to follow through on commitments, what
  487. 31:14it takes to be a great teammate, and showing them also by example, that work is a big part
  488. 31:20of all of our lives.
  489. 31:23Remember, your children are watching everything.
  490. 31:26They see what you do in every aspect of your life, and how you do it.
  491. 31:30bad time stories and helping them with homework are not the only ways to be a great parent.
  492. 31:35And neither is winning Super Bowls or MVPs.
  493. 31:38Being a great football player didn't make me a great dad.
  494. 31:42But how I became a great player certainly had an impact, from showing up day in and
  495. 31:47day out to doing whatever it took to get better, be successful, be a role model and to provide
  496. 31:53end quote.
  497. 31:55Mmm.
  498. 31:56There are a lot of good things Tom Brady said in this article.
  499. 32:01Some things I agree with, but I think Mr. Brady misses a huge component of what Scottie
  500. 32:07Scheffler said and I will reiterate what I said previously.
  501. 32:11Scottie Scheffler wasn't trying to figure out his priorities.
  502. 32:13He has his priorities very clear.
  503. 32:16The problem for Mr. Brady is that Scottie Scheffler's priorities do not comport with Mr. Brady's
  504. 32:22priorities.
  505. 32:23And therefore, Thomas O'udbrianth had a problem.
  506. 32:27Thomas O'udbrianth had a problem.
  507. 32:29Are people basically good?
  508. 32:31God says in Romans 3-10,
  509. 32:33there is no one righteous, not even one.
  510. 32:36This doesn't mean that people are incapable of doing good things.
  511. 32:40It means that apart from God, our nature is bent toward self-centeredness, pride, and rebellion.
  512. 32:47We don't just make mistakes.
  513. 32:49We sinned.
  514. 32:50Unsigned separates us from a holy God.
  515. 32:53Read Our People Basically Good by Dr. Alex McFarland at thestand.net.
  516. 32:59The Hamilton Quarter Podcast and One-Minute Common Terrets are available at EFR.net.
  517. 33:10Back to the Hamilton Quarter on American Family Radio.
  518. 33:14Welcome back to the Hamilton Corner, Abraham Hamilton the third here into the thick of it we go.
  519. 33:20So much of what Tom Brady said, and at the end I said Thomas Edward Brady, Tom Brady said a lot
  520. 33:27lot of good things there. Some things I really agree with, but there's one huge thing that
  521. 33:30I greatly disagree with. Tom Brady says, why does it have to be mutually exclusive? When
  522. 33:39Scotty Sheplet said he'd rather be a better father and husband than a good golfer. My question
  523. 33:44is, why are those mutually exclusive? They're different blocks on the pyramid, but they are
  524. 33:53part of the same pyramid. They're connected. Tom Brady went to go on and say, listen, my
  525. 33:57my laser focus, the way I work, it's important for our children to understand our work ethics.
  526. 34:02You teach by what you do, not only what you say.
  527. 34:05Your children are watching everything you do, I agree with that.
  528. 34:07Your children watch everything you do.
  529. 34:10From whence they express your more is caught and taught.
  530. 34:13But just because there's a lot that's caught doesn't mean you shouldn't teach.
  531. 34:20What is it?
  532. 34:21A, that you're saying that Tom Brady missed.
  533. 34:25I'll point it out for you.
  534. 34:30Tom Brady seemed, seems to have truncated
  535. 34:34Scotty Sheffler's comments.
  536. 34:38Before the British Open, to him being a great father.
  537. 34:44But I want you to notice, and in fact, let me play it again.
  538. 34:47Jeff, would you please play clip number one one more time
  539. 34:49just so that people understand what I'm saying?
  540. 34:51And I want you guys to listen.
  541. 34:52I'll narrate it a little bit as this is playing.
  542. 34:54Because notice Scotty Sheffler doesn't merely say,
  543. 34:57I'd rather be a great father than a great golfer.
  544. 35:00Listen closely to what he says.
  545. 35:01But one Jeff go.
  546. 35:05I love the challenge.
  547. 35:06I love being able to play this game for a living.
  548. 35:07It's one of the greatest joys of my life.
  549. 35:09But does it fill the deepest, you know, wants and desires of my heart?
  550. 35:14Absolutely not.
  551. 35:14You know, that's why I talk about family is being my priority because it really is.
  552. 35:17You know, I'm blessed to be able to come out here and play golf.
  553. 35:20But if my golf ever started affecting my home life or it ever affected the relationship
  554. 35:25I have with my wife or with my son, that's going to be the last day that I play out here.
  555. 35:28I heard that.
  556. 35:29If my golf ever affected my home life,
  557. 35:34the relationship that I have, who did he say first?
  558. 35:38With my wife and with my son.
  559. 35:41Notice that priority.
  560. 35:43See the big miss I think that Tom Brady has in his perspective
  561. 35:47is that he minimized and almost seemed to exclude
  562. 35:52from his calculation in his commentary.
  563. 35:56That Tom, that Scotty Scheffler is not only talking
  564. 35:59being a great dad. That's not all he's talking about. Scotty
  565. 36:07Scheffler is talking about being a great husband. And if you
  566. 36:13pair the comments before the British open with the comments,
  567. 36:15well, I actually watched the whole the whole interview and
  568. 36:18before the British open and after he won it, he says, in order,
  569. 36:21my priorities are my faith, my family, and then golf. Tom
  570. 36:27Brady seemed to have reduced what Scotty Scheffler said to
  571. 36:32being a great father, and this is where the rub comes in.
  572. 36:38And I think, because you cannot deny a person's personal context
  573. 36:45and how that influences their commentary.
  574. 36:49Tom Brady took issue with Scottie Sheffler's comments.
  575. 36:51They rubbed him, I believe,
  576. 36:55because they contrast with Tom Brady's perspective.
  577. 36:59See, Tom Brady, NFL Super Bowl Champion, seven times over,
  578. 37:02though he did have this disease called Eli Manningism.
  579. 37:06Two times, you call it twice, you know, it's almost like Schmove.
  580. 37:08You take the shot and then get it again, you know?
  581. 37:10He had, you know, seven-time Super Bowl champions,
  582. 37:1310-time Super Bowl appearances, NFL, great quarterback.
  583. 37:18But here's the reality.
  584. 37:20Tom Brady has multiple children by two different women.
  585. 37:26Tom Brady's oldest son was the product of his relationship
  586. 37:30with Bridget Moynihan, the actress Bridget Moynihan.
  587. 37:32She plays Aaron Reagan in the Blue Blood series.
  588. 37:36You know, he never married Bridget Moynihan.
  589. 37:39He then married the model,
  590. 37:42Jazelle Bunchen and had two children,
  591. 37:43which is all Bunchen.
  592. 37:45And they divorced.
  593. 37:47I don't wanna feed into the rumor mills.
  594. 37:49There was speculation about Jazelle Bunchen
  595. 37:51wanting him to focus more on home,
  596. 37:53then playing football, Tom Brady retired,
  597. 37:55went back to playing football.
  598. 37:56I'm not gonna get into speculation there,
  599. 37:57but what I will say is that Tom Brady
  600. 38:02has multiple children by multiple women.
  601. 38:07In all Tom Brady's successes,
  602. 38:11he was unable to maintain the matrimonial bond
  603. 38:16that he had with his wife, just a whole bunch.
  604. 38:17For whatever reason, I don't know the inner workers
  605. 38:20of their marriage, I don't know any of that,
  606. 38:22but the facts are the facts.
  607. 38:25Many people will say to Tom Brady, you know,
  608. 38:27as an amazing father, I don't know him personally,
  609. 38:29I don't know his relationship with his children,
  610. 38:31but the one thing that I do know is that Tom Brady
  611. 38:35has dissolved his marital union to the mother
  612. 38:38of several of his children.
  613. 38:41And I believe the hit dog that's hollering
  614. 38:44when Scotty Sheffler says that my life priorities
  615. 38:46are my faith and my family with my wife first.
  616. 38:52And that if my professional golf career
  617. 38:58ever deliciously affected my home life
  618. 39:01starting first with my relationship with my wife.
  619. 39:06Guess which one is gonna go?
  620. 39:09And a my wife guess who's gonna go?
  621. 39:12Professional golfing.
  622. 39:15It seems Scotty Scheffler's articulation of his life priorities contrast with Tom Brady's
  623. 39:20life prior.
  624. 39:23Now, while I agree your commitment to professionalism, your commitment to the trade by which you provide
  625. 39:28material revenue and support for your family and your children being able to watch your dedication
  626. 39:33and commitment to being the best, if not one of the best and not the best in your profession
  627. 39:38is a profound and necessary lesson for your children.
  628. 39:43However, not at the expense of your commitment,
  629. 39:47your demonstrable commitment to your wife.
  630. 39:52See, what Tom Brady fails to recognize,
  631. 39:54one of the indispensable ingredients,
  632. 39:58and this is where Christ following
  633. 40:00in the culture surrounding us,
  634. 40:03they rub against one another.
  635. 40:04The world won't agree with this,
  636. 40:05but guess what, I don't care,
  637. 40:06because the Bible teaches us.
  638. 40:08One of the indispensable ingredients to being a great father
  639. 40:13is being a great husband.
  640. 40:19One of the indispensable ingredients to being a godly father
  641. 40:24is being a godly husband.
  642. 40:29You see, I can write it off all the sociological data
  643. 40:33that we had that talks about one of the foundational
  644. 40:35ingredients for children to thrive.
  645. 40:37It's for the children to be reared in a home
  646. 40:40where their father married, sorry,
  647. 40:42where their father is married to their mother
  648. 40:45and they rear their children in the environment of marital fidelity and commitment
  649. 40:52that contrary to what Tom Brady may believe that one of the hurdles that he has introduced into his children's lives
  650. 41:00is that they're going to have to overcome the dissolution of the relationship between their father and their mother.
  651. 41:09You can say whatever you want, but this is a fact.
  652. 41:13This is where the Charles Spurgeon application of discernment is necessary.
  653. 41:17Yes, Tom Brady with all of his Super Bowls.
  654. 41:19all of his professional accomplishments, all of his wealth.
  655. 41:22A lot of people in the world believe Tom Brady to be handsome.
  656. 41:26He's a slim Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.
  657. 41:28This world cleft in my chin like Gaston.
  658. 41:31As a specimen, yes, I'm in team of dating.
  659. 41:37A lot of people think Tom Brady's advice is worth listening to
  660. 41:40for all of those reasons.
  661. 41:41His professional accomplishments, his wealth.
  662. 41:43Oh, he's amazing.
  663. 41:45Listen, be careful.
  664. 41:48Don't let Tom Brady get you put in a blender.
  665. 41:52Well, you say, yes, I am being a great father
  666. 41:54by being dedicated to my occupation.
  667. 41:58Being dedicated to the occupation is a necessary component,
  668. 42:02but not at the expense of being a great husband.
  669. 42:06One of the most important things I can do for my children,
  670. 42:09one of the most important lessons I can offer my children
  671. 42:12is demonstrably teaching them what it looks like
  672. 42:15for a man to love his wife as Christ loved the church.
  673. 42:20Know, Mr. Brady, Scotty Scheffler isn't confused,
  674. 42:23trying to figure out his priorities.
  675. 42:24No, no, no, no.
  676. 42:25He has his priorities very clear.
  677. 42:27Your objection is because his priorities
  678. 42:30don't reflect your priorities.
  679. 42:32His priorities showing that you can be the world
  680. 42:35number one golfer.
  681. 42:36You can be the number one in your profession.
  682. 42:38You can be an amazing professional athlete,
  683. 42:40but have your head put on straight to where you know
  684. 42:42as great as I am at golf, my first responsibility
  685. 42:45is to my wife.
  686. 42:48That's my first responsibility.
  687. 42:51There's no way you can become the world number one golfer
  688. 42:53if you are horrible at playing golf.
  689. 42:55There's no way you could be the world's number one golfer
  690. 42:57if you just, hey, I just, you know, hey,
  691. 43:00I hit it in the bunker, I dropped another ball
  692. 43:04in the drink in the water, there's no way.
  693. 43:09It reminds me of in John's recording of the gospel
  694. 43:13after Lazarus was resurrected
  695. 43:15and Jesus' popularity was spreading
  696. 43:17and the religious leaders of the day
  697. 43:20wanted to stop the fame and the acclaim of Jesus
  698. 43:23from spreading.
  699. 43:24But what are you gonna do?
  700. 43:25He raised Lazarus from the dead.
  701. 43:27I mean, you remember the scene?
  702. 43:29They had started the morning party,
  703. 43:31the wailing women had come out.
  704. 43:32Even Lazarus's own sister said to Jesus,
  705. 43:34man, if you'd have been here four days ago,
  706. 43:38then Jesus said, show me where you laid him.
  707. 43:43Jesus called Lazarus back to life, resurrected Lazarus.
  708. 43:49And then what happened?
  709. 43:50They religiously just came up with a plan.
  710. 43:52They came up with a plot.
  711. 43:54They wanted to kill Jesus,
  712. 43:56but they didn't only want to kill Jesus,
  713. 43:57what is the other part of their plot?
  714. 43:58You remember this from the scripture?
  715. 44:00They also planned to kill Lazarus.
  716. 44:01Now think about this, Lazarus had already died,
  717. 44:04Jesus has resurrected him.
  718. 44:05Remember I said that the profound
  719. 44:08Hamilton corner maxim sin makes you stupid.
  720. 44:11Jesus has already raised his man from the dead,
  721. 44:13yet the religious leaders were planning,
  722. 44:14well let's kill him.
  723. 44:15Jesus has already showed you that he is
  724. 44:19the resurrection in the life,
  725. 44:20but they're still saying, hey, well let's kill him.
  726. 44:23Why did they plot to kill Lazarus
  727. 44:26after Jesus raised him from the dead?
  728. 44:28Because they wanted to kill the evidence
  729. 44:31that a countervailing theological understanding
  730. 44:35would gain footing.
  731. 44:37Why does Scotty Sheffler's comments
  732. 44:40rile Tom Brady to the point where he writes
  733. 44:42a whole article about Scotty Sheffler?
  734. 44:44I mean, you Tom Brady, you the greatest of all time.
  735. 44:47Man, you won't have enough rings
  736. 44:48on one handful of your Super Bowl wins.
  737. 44:50Why are you worrying about Scotty Sheffler?
  738. 44:52I'll tell you why, because Scotty Sheffler's accomplishments
  739. 44:56and his commentary with his priority hierarchy
  740. 45:01violates Tom Brady's internal constitution.
  741. 45:05So he felt like, no, I need to smack this down right now.
  742. 45:08See, I don't want, I don't want noise to spread
  743. 45:10that you actually can be number one
  744. 45:12in your athletic profession,
  745. 45:14but you have the perspective, man, this ain't all my life.
  746. 45:18Yeah, I'm good at golf, but that ain't my whole life.
  747. 45:21My life begins with my commitment to my Lord,
  748. 45:24because God is a chef, lives a Christian,
  749. 45:25professing to be a Christian.
  750. 45:27And after my commitment to my Lord,
  751. 45:29my life is committed to my family.
  752. 45:31And the first one that I'm committed to in my family
  753. 45:33is my wife.
  754. 45:39Tom Brady couldn't allow that to stand.
  755. 45:41No, no, no, no, no.
  756. 45:42See, well, Scotty, Scotty, you know,
  757. 45:43he's just, he's a young pup.
  758. 45:45He doesn't understand.
  759. 45:46He may be still trying to figure out his priorities.
  760. 45:47No, Tom, he knows what his priorities are.
  761. 45:49You have a problem with what these impressive priorities are.
  762. 45:53Why can't you just congratulate Scotty,
  763. 45:54and go on about your business?
  764. 45:56No, because you have to,
  765. 45:59you have to use a Serena Williams racket
  766. 46:03and swat away the Sheffler disposition.
  767. 46:08And the reader and everybody know the way
  768. 46:09is the mama mentality, the way is the Tom Brady mentality.
  769. 46:12This is the way you're greatest of all time.
  770. 46:13This is the way you're greatest, this is the way you do it.
  771. 46:15No, no, it's not.
  772. 46:16It's not.
  773. 46:18It's not.
  774. 46:22Scotty Sheffler saying that he is not willing
  775. 46:24to allow his profession to destroy his family.
  776. 46:29That's what he's saying Tom.
  777. 46:32And if you were to take it to say,
  778. 46:34wait, why does this have to be mutually exclusive?
  779. 46:36No, it's not mutual exclusivity, Tom.
  780. 46:39I'm gonna go back to Tom Brady's specific comments.
  781. 46:44He said, quote, as part of his answer at media day,
  782. 46:46for example, Scottie said he'd rather be of better father
  783. 46:49and husband than a good golfer.
  784. 46:52And my question is, why are those mutually exclusive?
  785. 46:58Look at what Scottie Shuffler said.
  786. 47:00He said he would rather be a better husband and father
  787. 47:05than a good golfer.
  788. 47:06That's not talking about exclusivity.
  789. 47:08He's not saying he can be a great golfer or a great father.
  790. 47:13No, he is actually articulating what you say
  791. 47:16it was on your pyramid.
  792. 47:17And Jeff, go ahead and put it on the screen.
  793. 47:19Right there, you see, he's got his shuffle.
  794. 47:20He's sitting at the dais with the trophy next to him.
  795. 47:25He just won the tournament,
  796. 47:27but he's simply explaining that he can be a good golfer,
  797. 47:31but that's not his primary commitment.
  798. 47:34And in rub time braided the wrong way,
  799. 47:36because Tom Brady wants you to have this perspective
  800. 47:38of y'all, you can be either an amazing golfer.
  801. 47:43He's presented it as if Scottie Shepp was saying,
  802. 47:45he has me either an amazing golfer
  803. 47:47or a great husband or father.
  804. 47:49Scottie Shepp was saying, no, no, no, no.
  805. 47:51I'm not saying it's either or Tom.
  806. 47:53I'm saying there's one that comes higher
  807. 47:56on my personal priority list than the other.
  808. 47:59That's what he's saying.
  809. 48:00And his priorities are right.
  810. 48:03His priorities are right.
  811. 48:05Anything that comes against his home
  812. 48:07is he would recognize as a foreign invader.
  813. 48:09So what he's simply saying is that he's not trying
  814. 48:12to figure out his priorities, he has his priorities clear.
  815. 48:14The fact is, it seems from Tom Brady's article
  816. 48:17that he doesn't like Scotty Scheffler's priorities.
  817. 48:20He wants Scotty Scheffler to view professional achievement
  818. 48:23and acclaim to be equally as important
  819. 48:25as his commitment to his home.
  820. 48:27And that, my friends, is a misordered priority.
  821. 48:31Scotty Scheffler has a right, Tom Brady,
  822. 48:33you can throw a football,
  823. 48:35but I wouldn't listen to your advice on this one.
